George Catlin
Catlin was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Perhaps part of his fascination with Native
Americans began when his mother was captured by them.
Catlin was a lawyer, but he gave that profession up to paint Native Americans in their native land.
He spent most of his life painting Native American and championing their cause.

E.S. Paxson
E.S. Paxson arrived in the Montana Territory in 1877, when he was about 25 years old. He lived with
Native Americans for a while. He also worked as a scout, a messenger, a stagecoach guard among
other types of employment.
His rich experiences living in the west and having shared much of his life with Native Americans
certainly affected his painting. He chronicled many of his experiences. Paxson's love of the West
and respect for its People is evident in his paintings.
