Flying Fish (1910)
by Herbert James Draper (1863-1920)

Draper was born in London and studied science before studying art.Draper was a late follower of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. His work was influenced by John Waterhouse, Lord Leighton and Burne-Jones.

In this painting, a mermaid leaps from the ocean to try to catch a flying fish. She too, appears to be flying out of the water. So the title does refer to both the mermaid and the fish she is trying to catch.

Kiss of the Enchantress circa 1890
by Isobel Lilian Gloag 1868-191x

Gloag was born in London. She formally studied art in Kennsington and in Paris. She had 19 works exhibited at the Royal Academy. Gloag is considered by some to be a symbolist painter, but in reality her work is more in the style of the Pre-Raphaelite paintings.

In this romantic painting, a mermaid seduces a knight. As in many mermaid myths, the mermaid is known to lure and capture helpless men. Perhaps this is a testimony that the female gender is actually not the "weaker sex".

The Mermaid in Peril

Breakspeare was a British artist who painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style. He enjoyed magical and mythical subjects.

This painting is actually called "The Mermaid" I expanded the title to differentiate it from Waterhouse¹s "The Mermaid". A mermaid clings to the rocks trying to stay out of the reach of a giant shrimp.
