La
Belle Dame Sans Mercy
by John Waterhouse Born in Rome to English parents, Waterhouse later lived in England and studied at the Royal Academy where he became part of the Pre-Raphelite Circle. His paintings were often influenced by the poet Tennyson and by Homer's myths. This 1893 painting was inspired by a poem by Keats of the same title. In this poem, a girl from the fairy wood has incredible power over knights. In this painting, she wears her heart on her sleeve, and wraps a noose of her own hair around the hopeless knight. She appears innocent, but even the knight's armor and lance can't protect him from her powers. Price: 13.95 plus shipping/handling. CA residents, please add 7.375% sales tax. The Beaded Bear

Godspeed is a particularly poignant painting of a lady wishing her beloved knight "Godspeed" as he goes off to battle. She gives him a red scarf to remember her by, for luck, and hopes for his speedy return. A gargoyle at the base of the stairs looks on, perhaps warding off ill fortune.
