The Enchanted Garden
by John W. Waterhouse

John Waterhouse was born in Rome and later moved to England with his family. Early in his career, he painted Greek and Roman subjects, no doubt as an influence of his childhood. In the 1880's, he was influenced by literary themes. This particular painting was Waterhouse's last. It is an unfinished painting.

This painting may have been inspired by Tennyson's poem about Avalon. It also shows Waterhouse's interest in garden settings. It has been said that this garden has an Italian feel. Perhaps Waterhouse was returning to his childhood in Italy when he created this painting.

A Girl With A Watering Can
by Pierre Renoir

Renoir was a French Impressionist artist. He worked with Monet, and together the two artists defined Impressionistic Art. Renoir preferred painting people to Monet¹s landscapes.

In this painting, Renoir gives us a child's eye view of a garden path. It is a charming, innocent painting that is recognizable the world over.

Maria on the Terrace
by Daniel Ridgeway Knight

Daniel Ridgeway Knight was born in Pennsylvania. He studied art at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. There, he was class mates with American Impressionistic painter May Cassatt. In 1861, Knight went to Paris to study art. He returned to the US in 1861 to serve in the Union Army. He returned again to Paris in 1872 where he befriended Renoir.

This is a painting that is typical of Knight's style. Simple peasant women in daily activity. His approach is more cheerful than others who painted the same subject matter in his time period.

A Peacock and Doves in a Garden
by Eugene Bidau

Unfortunately, I couldn¹t find a biography about this artist. All the paintings I have seen by this artist are beautiful floral themes. This painting is exquisite, so I just had to transform it into beads. I hope that you will like this piece as much as I do.

A Woman, A Man and a Serpent
by John Liston Byam Shaw

Shaw was born in India, and later graduated from the Royal Academy in London in 1890. He was a late follower of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Shaw was a prolific illustrator of books and short stories. In 1910, he founded the Byam School of Art which is in London and is still active today.

In this painting, he depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Eve is the central figure in this painting, while Adam is in the shadows and playing a secondary role. The garden is filled with several birds (how many can you find?) and a snake is evident, both along the right hand side and bottom of the painting, and less evident, in the upper left.

blos_f.jpg Under the Blossom that Hangs on the Bough
by John Godward

Godward was a British artist, and a follower of Sir Lawrence Tadema. Their style was referred to as "the marble school" since marble was a part of so many of their paintings. Godward loved to paint beautiful women in classic Greek style robes. Godward exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art. Unfortunately for Godward, most Victorian style paintings of his type became a mockery at that time. Since Godward was unable to change his style, his depression led him to commit suicide. Ironically his paintings are very popular today.

This painting is typical of much of his work. A beautiful woman, flowers, and the ever present marble. It is vibrant with color, and has a peaceful feeling.

The Young Gardener
by George Dulop Leslie

Son of painter C.R. Leslie, George Leslie was born in London. His focus in painting was to capture the sunny side of English domestic life. I think he captured that sentiment in this painting. The English have an intense love of gardens.

In this sweet painting, a mother helps her young daughter to learn the love of gardening. What could be sweeter? A lovely garden and the joys of a sweet child eager to learn and explore the world around her.
